The Clea Story
Ian Reid has been farming Angus cattle in the Monaro region since 1965. He is one of a multi-generation farming family, whose grandfather, Andrew Reid, was among the first to import Aberdeen Angus genetics from Scotland to Australia in the early 1920s. Ian was born and raised near Yass, where his passion for the highest quality Angus cattle began.
The Clea genetics originated from Narrengullen in the 1960s, and over the decades have been built upon with key purchases from Hazeldean, Kaharau (New Zealand), Te Mania and Rennylea. We have valued discussion with industry leaders over the decades: Brian Corrigan, Nick Burton Taylor, James Litchfield, Andrew Campbell, Tim Hickey, Bruce Urquhart, Don Lawson, Tony Dowe have all been instrumental in developing the Clea herd at various times.
Quality wise, our unequivocal requirement over time has been for correct confirmation, sound feet and a growth pattern to suit our environment. We have developed strengths in eye muscle area, intramuscular fat (marbling) and breeding efficiency, meaning low 600-day EBVs. We value happy cattle living calm lives with a good temperament.
When it comes to livestock, our stock are strong and resilient to cold, tough conditions. We aim to breed them for good temperament and good conformation as a measure of structural fitness. (Scottish perhaps!)
At all times, we strive to seek the wisdom to manage our enterprise and environment to best effect in a constellation of circumstances to protect its beauty and tranquillity.
Our success comes from breeding reliable, strong and versatile cattle that are a pleasure to handle and go easy on the country.
